  1. Writing a devotion for a mission to Haiti. Vodoo and Spiritualism are mixed with Christian practices.
Using the above grid how would I give an overview of “Spiritualism?” Is it similar to Pantheism?

    • Portals was designed for American worldviews, so it does not cover spiritualism per se. In Haiti, it is most similar to shamanism. The answers to the four questions are: 1) We are material beings who also have spirits, and after death our spirits continue on and can influence this world; there are other spirits in the world as well. 2) While there are many things that can go wrong in the world, the ones we are most concerned with are those caused by evil spirits that can harm us either on their own volition or because they were sent against us by an enemy sorcerer/shaman/witch doctor. 3) The solution to this is to pay a sorcerer/shaman/witch doctor to remove the curse or to send away the evil spirits through ritual or other means. 4) My purpose is largely to avoid attracting the attention of malevolent spiritual forces or, if I am a sorcerer/shaman/witch doctor, to increase in power so the spirits I control or the spells I cast are more powerful. In the latter case, this will make my own spirit more potent so that after death I can have more power in the spirit world. This is a general description of shamanism; the details will undoubtedly vary a bit from culture to culture and it only deals with the spiritual dimensions of the worldview, but this should give you enough to get started.

      • Just what I was seeking. A basic idea of Haiti’s worldview so I can assist the group in developing a more effective witness to the individuals they interact.
        Thank you so much,
